Traffic Safety Procedures at JRMS

Traffic Safety Plan 

We restrict all vehicle access to the bus ramp in the morning and afternoon during pick-up and drop off. We also restrict any vehicles from leaving the rear of the school once students are dismissed at the end of the educational day. In the front parking lot, we use traffic cones to make one lane of travel.  We also use the Exceptional Education buses to block the travel lanes in the afternoon to restrict any vehicles from blocking the buses and interfering in the loading of Exceptional Education students. We have worked with the Henrico Police Traffic Safety Unit and our SRO to enforce the speed limit and other traffic violations on Messer Road and on our property.

Our SRO routinely checks the handicap parking for any parking violations and enforces the No Parking in Fire Lane regulation. We have educated our parents that morning drop-off does not begin until 8:05 am. Our SRO routinely communicates with parents about any school-traffic issues. Our SRO educates all staff about school traffic safety and advises them of when the school caution lights are operating in the morning and afternoon.

The bus loop is located in the back of the school building and there are signs stating “Buses Only” leading to the area. Parents/Guardians are required to park in the identified Visitor parking spaces in the front parking lot when they drop-off and/or pick-up their students. The main entrance is available for parent use as their main entryway. There are signs that direct parents to this entrance. The procedure for students to be picked up from JRMS is: 1) Parents/Guardians park in the Visitor Parking Lot, 2) Parents/Guardians display their identification in the main office in order to receive their student(s), and 3) the student is called to the main office for dismissal.     

School Hours of Operation: 8:05 am – 3:15 pm- Students are not permitted to enter the school building until 8:05 am with the exception of before-school activities. After 3:15 students are not permitted to re-enter the school building with the exception of planned after-school activities.

Identification of parking spaces:  Staff, visitors, and students are able to park within the designated parking lots without restriction except for handicapped spaces.

Identification of student drop off and pick up areas: Parents may drop off students in the morning at the front entrance using the front loop starting at 8:05 am. There are signs directing parents to the drop-off area. Parents may pick up their child starting at 3:15 pm in the parking lot, not the front loop. Starting at 2:45 pm the front loop will be blocked using cones.

Identification of main or single point of entry available for parent use: The main entrance is available for parent use as the primary entryway. There are signs that direct parents to this entrance.

Directional flow of traffic, including entrances and exits:  At the entrance to the school, there are signs directing parents to parent drop-off as well as visitor and staff parking. There are also white painted arrows in the parking lot directing traffic from entrance to exit.

Identification of bus loop: There is one “Buses Only” sign leading into the bus loop area.
